Celebrating #ShwmaeSumae with over 70 new Welsh GIFs!

When better than Diwrnod Shwmae S’umae to announce 74 brand new Welsh Language GIFs by Mwydro for everyone to use free of charge on social media!

The GIFs, which showcase local Idioms, Proverbs and Saying, were designed by secondary school pupils in Ceredigion in a series of recent GIFs in Schools workshops led by Caernarfon based digital illustration business, Mwydro.

The workshops were led jointly with Cardi Iaith, the Welsh Language Support Team at Ceredigion County Council, to give pupils a fun and unique opportunity to use and celebrate the Welsh language through digital art.

A week’s tour of seven workshops saw over 200 pupils take up the challenge of turning their on paper sketches of regional idioms and sayings from ‘Wedi Danto’ to ‘Cof fel Gogr’ to ‘Chwit Chwat’ into digital masterpieces. The best were then selected to be transformed into animated GIF stickers and be placed in the public GIF search bar.

Enfys Hatcher, a teacher at Ysgol Henry Richard noted: “Thank you to Mwydro and Cardi Iaith for coming out to our school. It was a great experience for the pupils. The idioms are great!”

To discover the full collection of GIFs search @mwydro in the public GIF search bar on Instagram, Snapchat or TikTok, or ‘@mwydro Sticker’ on Facebook, X, WhatsApp or Canva. Or, you can also search the name of the individual idiom or proverb in the search bar.

Mwydro’s collection of Welsh Language GIFs is now almost 1,500 GIFs, which have been viewed over 250 million times. Sioned Young, founder of Mwydro noted:

“It’s a special feeling being able to offer something which makes it easy and fun for anyone from any part of the world to use the Welsh Language on their socials. Mwydro doesn’t make any commission or royalties from people using our public collection of Welsh Language GIFs, but it’s great to see how they’ve reached so many people.”

Mwydro travels all over Wales leading GIFs in Schools workshops including Welsh Language Place Name GIF Workshops which have been enjoyed by over 100 schools, and by now also the new Welsh Idioms workshop. For further information or to arrange a workshop, contact Mwydro on info@mwydro.com
